The District 832 Training site is open to members of IUOE Local 158 in good standing as well as District 832 registered apprentices.

  • Always dress for work conditions at the training center. Boots, hard hats, and safety glasses are essential. No sneakers or casual
    clothing are acceptable for outdoor training.
  • You must be current on your monthly dues.
  • All classes start promptly at 8:00 AM.
  • Sign up for classes by calling the site or union hall, faxing a class sign-up sheet, or use the calendar to register.

  • 480 training hours
  • 4,100 hours working for a signatory contractor

The average apprentice completes our program in 4 years.

IUOE Local 158 Training Fund/District 832 will be holding a periodic recruitment to recruit two (2) apprentice heavy equipment operators. Applications can be obtained on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, in person only, from IUOE Local 158, District 832’s office located at 3174 Brighton-Henrietta Town Line Road, Rochester, NY 14623 from 8:00 am – 3:30 pm for 10 business days or until 25 applications have been submitted, whichever comes first. Applications must be completed on the premises.

  1. Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required at time of acceptance.
  2. Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as GED or TASC). Proof will be required at time of acceptance.
  3. Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of an operating engineer, which includes:
    • Lifting heavy objects.
    • Working in confined spaces.
    • Working with and/or operating hazardous machinery.
    • Working in extremely dusty conditions.
    • Working in extremely hot, cold, or damp weather.
    • Working over water.
    • Working from heights.
    • Possible exposure to loud noises and respiratory irritants.
  4. Must pass a drug/alcohol test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship. Apprentices may be subject to random drug testing at any time during the apprenticeship.
  5. Must reside within the jurisdiction of Local Union 158 District 832: Allegany, Livingston, Monroe, Chemung, Ontario, Schuyler, Steuben, Wayne or Yates County, eastern part of Genesee County, including City of Batavia.
  6. Must be able to read, hear and understand verbal instructions and warnings given in English.
  7. Must have at least one year of trade-related experience or must have successfully completed a construction related pre-apprenticeship or must have successfully completed a construction related training program.
  8. Must possess a valid driver’s license in order to operate company vehicles. Proof will be required at time of acceptance.
  9. Must have reliable transportation to and from various work sites and related instruction classes at the approved school.

Successful applicants must be willing to work closely with others and take constructive criticism and learn from it. An outstanding work ethic is a must. In exchange for this dedication to their training they will be rewarded with, upon successful completion of their apprenticeship, the opportunity to work in a well paying job and have the ability to enjoy a good standard of living.
